Abercrombie & Fitch is an American lifestyle brand that has been around since 1892 in various forms. From its Manhattan, NY location, the first store, founded by David Abercrombie and Ezra Fitch, supplied high-end sporting and vacation supplies. The firm dissolved in 1976, but the Abercrombie & Fitch name was revived in 1978 by Texas retailer Oshman’s Sporting Goods, which operated largely as a mail-order company with stores in Beverly Hills, CA, Dallas, TX, and New York, NY. The Limited, an American apparel company, bought the company name and operations in 1988 and rebranded it as high-end casual luxury clothes and lifestyle brand aimed at the youthful market.
